We hold that people are whole and more capable than they have been taught to think. For generations we have been trained to understand the world, and ourselves, as collections of parts. Neither works that way. The science of complexity now gives rigorous language to what the best of the classical tradition already knew—what matters most emerges from the whole.
So we draw on all of human learning, from philosophy and the classics to the sciences, mathematics, literature, and the arts. And we ask our readers to do real work. There is no playbook for a good life, but there is a long tradition of people deliberately searching for the answers. Our books carry that tradition forward, written as a dialogue with the reader.
Most leadership writing treats complexity as an obstacle to be reduced. This book treats it as the medium itself—organizations governed by entropy, and leadership as the continuous transformation of uncertainty into structured, adaptive action.
